New Tonya Gross Millinery Crowd Funding Campaign on Indiegogo!
20 January 2013, Chicago, IL
[+]
Tonya Gross Millinery announces her
new campaign on Indiegogo, a crowd funding site, to fund her debut hat collection for online retailer,
Zappos.com"Hi! I am Tonya Gross from Tonya Gross Millinery. I am a hat designer, also known as a milliner, based in Chicago, IL. I produce bespoke, couture and ready-to-wear hats for men and women. I am excited about an opportunity that most small businesses like mine dream of; I have the opportunity to produce and sell my collection of hats through online retailer
Zappos.com. This collection will be made in Chicago, IL, USA!
Recently, I was selected by Zappos.com for its 2013 Emerging Designer Program, a program initiated by Zappos.com employees to promote up-and-coming designers like myself. In March of 2013, my Tonya Gross Millinery CAPSule Collection for the Zappos.com Emerging Designer Program will be prominently featured by Zappos.com through an online boutique, and through social media and marketing campaigns. I am thrilled for the opportunity to partner with such a prominent online retailer like Zappos.com, and so honored by this distinction. As a fledgling designer, it is the big break for which I have worked so hard for many years.
This is a unique venture in that I will produce handmade, ready-to-wear hats for a large volume online retailer that are locally produced and plan to hire and train a talented team drawn from the Chicago fashion industry; I am really proud of this. But, I need your help to raise the funds to produce my line of handmade hats.
Your
contribution to my campaign will allow me to:
- purchase hat foundation materials & trims to complete a large volume order for Zappos.com
- initiate a hiring and training program for MITs-- aka Milliners in Training
hire this team to assist in fulfilling a large volume order of HANDMADE hats
- purchase the marketing materials, hat boxes, shipping materials, and ship to the Zappos.com warehouse
- fulfill the PERKS for this campaign that reflect the best of my Zappos.com collection!
I believe my project is significant for the following reasons:
- I will bring US-made quality, hand-finished couture and ready-to-wear head wear to a large, online global marketplace
- I can increase the number of job opportunities for skilled labor in apparel manufacturing in the Midwest
- Create training programs and employ a talented pool of skilled individuals that will earn a living wage
- I will act as a catalyst to restore the tradition of hat manufacturing in Chicago- much like BesBen, Raymond Hudd and Mr John
- I will successfully fulfill the order and encourage a large online retailer to take a chance on a small business rather than import from a mass-production facility outside of the US
Yes, I tried and failed to make my goal on another crowdfunding site around the holidays-- bad timing on my part. It was an all or nothing platform; therefore, I have initiated this Indiegogo campaign because the need to fund my collection still exists. Note: I did secure a relationship with a shipping vendor that will significantly lower my overhead (and have lowered my goal accordingly.)
I understand that not everyone can afford to make a contribution. I ask for your help to FORWARD
this campaign on to others who may be able to help. Please SHARE! I am thrilled for the opportunity to begin this journey with Zappos.com and to initiate a start-up manufacturing operation that will create jobs in Chicago. I cannot produce this collection without your support. THANK YOU for viewing this campaign and for your contribution!"
The
Tonya Gross Millinery Debut Hat Collection for Zappos.com Campaign on Indiegogo ends on 11 February 2013.

Tonya Gross Hat Collection for Zappos.com Kickstarter Project Update
28 December 2012. Tonya Gross Millinery posted an Update to the Tonya Gross Hat Collection for Zappos.com
Kickstarter Project"Hi Friends!
As of today, progress on my Kickstarter project has been really slow. I am at 6% of my goal. I have 14 days left and have a long way to go. Did I make it more difficult for myself by launching a project so close to the holidays? Maybe, but I do think I can make a compelling case to support my project:
1. Manufacturing in the US: My project will launch a small manufacturing business in Chicago. "The President recognizes that manufacturing is critical to Americas long-term economic competitiveness and our ability to win the future." Read more about President Obama's small business and US manufacturing initiatives
here.
2. Job creation in Chicago: My Kickstarter project will help create jobs in Chicago by sourcing local talent to manufacture this collection for Zappos.com. I will train couture sewing and hat finishing and will pay a living wage to produce this collection.
3. Keep the wizard behind the curtain: Have you seen my
video? Keep me in the studio, not in front of a camera!
wink4. It takes a village: If I don't make my goal, I will not have the minimum amount needed to produce the collection. Yes, being tapped as an Emerging Designer for Zappos.com is a incredible distinction in its own right, but I have to raise the capital to create the collection first. I really do need your help.
Will you share my story? May I ask you to forward the
link to my Kickstarter project?
I lured you into this update with a promise of pictures, yes. Last Friday, Tonya Gross Millinery was at the Drake Hotel Chicago for the annual Holiday Tea at the Palm Court. We had a wonderful time! I hosted a runway and trunk show with a few other designers and thought I would share a few 'behind the scenes' pics with you! I am always grateful to the amazing team of talented people that help me make these events possible and want to mention them here:

Tonya Gross says, I am thrilled for the opportunity to partner with such a prominent online retailer like Zappos, and so honored by this distinction. This is a unique venture in that I will produce handmade hats for a large volume online retailer that are locally produced and will employ a talented pool of resources drawn from the Chicago fashion industry; I am really proud of this.
From the Zappos Emerging Designer site: "Trend Manager Natasha Pace knows what it can mean to a struggling designer to sell their designs on Zappos.com: We recognize that there is so much undiscovered talent that exists in the fashion industry and we really want to be able to help designers that are at the beginning stages of getting their collection off the ground, to present their designs on a national level, said Pace. To me, thats what makes this program so unique and excitingwere helping to make dreams come true.

LES DAMES HOST FASHION PLATES FUNDRAISER
SHOWCASING LOCAL FOOD AND FASHION
An evening with Chicagos top chefs and fashion designers in a runway show and dinner gala.
CHICAGO Chicago has two glamour camps - the foodie in crowd and the style conscious fashion scene. Every so often these worlds intertwine, and theyll get that chance at Fashion Plates, a gala and runway show hosted by the Chicago Chapter of Les Dames dEscoffier International, on May 10, 2010 at the Chicago Cultural Center..
In a Top Chef meets Project Runway event, Fashion Plates brings together six of the citys most notable chefs with six top, local designers to create coordinating dishes and outfits based on fashion and food words drawn earlier out of a hat. Master Sommelier Alpana Singh of Lettuce Entertain You and host of WTTWs Check Please! will emcee the event.
On the runway, chef and designer duos will showcase their collaborative efforts while guests get the chance to try the dishes at a seated dinner. Participating chefs include Dames Carrie Nahabedian of Naha and Shelley Young of the Chopping Block as well as Rick Gresh of David Burkes Primehouse, Martial Noguier of Café des Architectes, Takashi Yagahashi of Takashi, and Randy Zweiban of Province, coupled with six outstanding Chicago designersPierre Colorado of Blake Standard, 5p1t designers Richard Morse and Daryl Sneed, Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, Tonya Gross, Michelle Tan, and Nora del Busto.
Proceeds from the dinner gala will go toward funding Les Dames-sponsored culinary school scholarships for outstanding women in the area. Part of the proceeds will also go toward Green Tables, a Les Dames Chicago Chapter initiative with the McCormick Boys & Girls club to teach children about healthy cooking and gardening.
This is a very exciting event for Les Dames and everyone else, said Nahabedian. I am looking forward to working with Tonya to come up with a great dish and outfit that fits our two words, and to help raise money for a great cause.
Zweiban showed similar enthusiasm for the event and collaboration process. This event certainly takes everything out of the box, said Zweiban, who is paired with Sneed and Morse. When we looked at the colors and design of Province and at the fashion designers style, both are very tailored and sleek and there are a lot of similarities, so it will be interesting to see how that transforms into a complimentary dish and an outfit.
Past recipients of the Les Dames Culinary Scholarship include JoAnn Relf, who now heads up the City of Chicagos Culinary Concieges and World Kitchen programs, as well as Gail Mitchell, manager of the bake shop at Washburnes Sikia Restaurant and Violeta Morales, Washburne Catering Manager.
Working with Les Dames really opened my eyes I didnt realize there were so many women in the food industry that were top entrepreneurs and business leaders, and many have become my mentors, said Relf, who used the scholarship to fund culinary studies at Washburne Culinary Institute.
Cocktails and Dinner
The Fashion Plates event kicks off with a cocktail hour featuring creations by Master Mixologist Adam Seger of Nacional 27, and passed hors doeuvres prepared by culinary students from CHIC, Kendall College, Robert Morris College and Washburne Culinary Institute.
Guests will also have the chance to peruse four table tops styled after Paris, Milan, New York and Chicago with china, crystal, linens, and centerpieces-all available for raffle.
When dinner service begins, guests will take their seats at tables for ten under the spectacular Tiffany dome in the Cultural Centers Preston Bradley Hall. To start off, theyll enjoy an amuse bouche prepared by the three scholarship winners.
The Runway Show
Let the show begin! The first three groups of fashion designers and chefs will make their way down the catwalk showcasing their outfit on live models as guests get to taste scaled down versions of their dishes. As an example, one pair chose the words tomato and tassel at random, while another pair plucked the words cinnamon and circular from a hat.
After a short break, the second group of three chef-designer duos will showcase their work on the runway as guests enjoy a second round of dishes.
Preparation for the event has allowed them the opportunity to branch out of their comfort zone into new forms of creativity in a truly collaborative partnership. In fact, Fig Media will shoot videos of the partnerships at work in their studio and play the footage in between runway shows.
Dessert Dash
Earlier in the evening, guests perused tables showcasing desserts created by leading pastry chefs in the city with the opportunity to bid on what they wanted to taste through a silent auction. During Dessert Dash, pastry queen Gale Gand will announce tables with the most bids and open final bidding up for a live auction.
Extravagent treats from Patty Rothmans MORE Cupcakes as well as from Dames Dana Benigno and Tara Lane of Sweet Girls, Pamela Fitzpatrick and Melina Kelson will be available for auction; proceeds will also go toward culinary school scholarships and Green Tables.
